What is Kairo and how do I get started?

Kairo is an AI calorie tracker for iPhone: you photograph your meal and Kairo estimates calories, protein, carbohydrates and fat. The download is free of charge, every account has three AI analyses without a subscription, and barcode lookups are unlimited. Your first scan

  1. Download Kairo from the App Store. You need an iPhone running iOS 16.4 or later.
  2. Answer the setup questions (goal, sex, age, height, weight, target weight, activity level, pace) and sign in with Sign in with Apple or Sign in with Google. You do not create a password with Kairo.
  3. Kairo calculates your calorie goal and macro goals from those answers.
  4. Tap the scan button in the bottom bar and choose "Scan food".
  5. Point the camera at your meal in "Photo" mode and take the picture. Once the analysis finishes, the meal appears in your day with calories and macros.
  6. If something is off, open the meal and tap "Edit". See Photo scan and correcting a result.

What does Kairo do?

Kairo records what you eat and sets it against your daily goal. A meal gets into the app in four ways: as a photo, as a description by text or voice, through the barcode on a package, or through a photo of a restaurant menu. For every meal Kairo shows calories, protein, carbohydrates and fat.

On top of that there is the Body Map, which shows how your nutrition supports different body systems, groups with friends, a streak, widgets for the Home Screen and Lock Screen, an Apple Watch app and Apple Health integration.

How does Kairo calculate my calorie goal?

From your setup answers Kairo calculates your basal metabolic rate (BMR) with the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, and from that and your activity level your total daily energy expenditure (TDEE). Depending on your goal (lose weight, maintain, build muscle, gain weight), that gives your calorie goal and macro goals.

You can change your goals later in your profile under "My Goals".

What does it cost to start?

The download is free of charge. Without a subscription every account has three AI analyses; barcode lookups are unlimited. From the fourth AI analysis on you need a subscription. Details: Scans without a subscription and Prices, plans and the free trial.

Are the numbers accurate?

The numbers are AI estimates and can differ from the actual nutritional values. We measured how close they get and published the results: How accurate is Kairo?. Kairo does not replace professional dietary advice or a medical diagnosis.
