Can ChatGPT count calories from a photo?
Yes, roughly. ChatGPT recognises what is on the plate and guesses a calorie figure, with no portion measurement, no nutrition database and no history. For "about how much is this" that's fine. For tracking over weeks you need an app that estimates portions, checks reference data and stores results. Kairo does that, and connects to ChatGPT and Claude.

In short
- ChatGPT alone: recognises dishes, guesses calories, no portion measurement, no reference database. Every answer is a fresh guess.
- What is missing: a diary, a daily target, macro totals, barcode, Apple Health, a trend over weeks.
- Kairo: photo scan in under 3 seconds, cross-checked against USDA and DGE values, label values for branded products, a published accuracy benchmark.
- Together: connect Kairo to ChatGPT or Claude: your assistant reads your real diary and can log meals when you tell it to.
We build Kairo, and Kairo has an official connection to ChatGPT and Claude, so we have an interest in you using both rather than ChatGPT alone. We still describe what ChatGPT can do on its own fairly: for a quick read it is good, and we say so.
How good is ChatGPT at estimating calories from a photo, really?
Surprisingly good at recognition, unreliable on quantity. A current multimodal model will name the components of a plate of spaghetti bolognese and offer a plausible range, often "around 600–800 kcal". It cannot tell you where that number came from: it is the most probable text for that image, not the result of measuring a portion against a nutrition table. Ask twice and you get two numbers. Upload the same photo tomorrow and you get a third.
That is not a criticism of ChatGPT. It is a language model, not a food diary. As a sanity check in a restaurant ("is this closer to 500 or 1,000?") it is useful. As the basis for a calorie deficit over eight weeks it lacks the one thing tracking is made of: the total.
What does a calorie app do that ChatGPT does not?
It estimates the portion, checks against reference data, and adds up. Kairo identifies the components, estimates each one in grams, cross-references the nutrition against USDA FoodData Central and Germany's DGE values, and pulls label values for branded products, so a serving of Nutella is not guessed. The result lands in your diary, counts toward your target, feeds your Body Map and syncs to Apple Health.
The second difference is checkability. Kairo publishes a reproducible accuracy benchmark: 16 meals, about 3.5% error on branded items against the label, 10–12% on loose whole foods. There is no such number for ChatGPT, because there is no fixed method to measure. And a third, practical one: the barcode scanner with Open Food Facts data beats any photo on packaged goods, and ChatGPT has none.
How do you connect ChatGPT or Claude to Kairo?
Through the MCP standard, which ChatGPT, Claude, Claude Code, Codex and Gemini CLI support. You add Kairo's endpoint in your assistant, sign in in the browser with your Kairo account (Apple or Google login, the same as in the app) and confirm the connection. From then on your assistant can do ten things with your data: overview, daily macros, meal list, meal details including micronutrients, weight history, micronutrient summary, food statistics, body-score history, and, on your explicit instruction, log a meal from text or log your weight.
The setup guide with steps per assistant is at mcp.kairocalories.com. The connection runs on your own login token; Kairo's server uses no master key, and the same per-user access rules as the app apply. You can revoke it any time under "Connections".
What does the combination give you day to day?
You photograph in Kairo (fast, measured, stored) and ask ChatGPT or Claude the things a diary has no screen for: "How much protein am I short this week on average?", "What should I eat tonight to stay at 2,000?", "Which weekdays do I eat the most?". The assistant reads your real numbers instead of guessing, and when you say "log a cheese sandwich with cucumber", it lands in Kairo as a meal and gets analysed there.
Two prompts come ready-made: a weekly review and a "plan the rest of my day". Everything that reads, the assistant may do without asking; writing only when you say so. That is how the tool descriptions your assistant sees are written.
When is ChatGPT alone enough, and when is it not?
ChatGPT alone is enough when you want a one-off estimate, do not want to install anything, or are curious about a dish you are not going to eat yourself. It is not enough when you are pursuing a goal, because a goal needs a total and a total needs a diary. Nor for packaged products, where the barcode is the way, nor when you want to know how accurate an estimate is, because ChatGPT cannot measure that. For "which app, then?", see Is there an app that counts calories from a photo?.
How did we check this?
Statements about ChatGPT describe how multimodal language models work in general. We ran no benchmark of ChatGPT calorie estimates and therefore give no error figure for it. Kairo figures come from our benchmark of 16 June 2026. The description of Kairo's assistant connection comes from our own implementation (MCP endpoint, OAuth login, ten tools) and is documented at mcp.kairocalories.com.

How can you track calories with ChatGPT or Claude?
An AI assistant is a good conversation partner and a poor diary. How to connect ChatGPT or Claude to Kairo, what the assistant can then do (read, analyse, log on instruction), and how the connection is secured.

Is there an app that counts calories from a photo?
Yes, several. Kairo, Cal AI and SnapCalorie are built around the photo scan; MyFitnessPal, Yazio, Cronometer and Lose It! added it behind their paid tiers. What a photo can and cannot tell an app, with real error figures.

How accurate are AI calorie counting apps?
About 3.5% error on labelled branded foods, 10–12% on loose whole foods, and research puts the technique at 15–25% overall. What those numbers mean day to day, and how to make any photo estimate better.

What people also ask
How accurate is ChatGPT at counting calories?
It cannot be quantified: ChatGPT has no fixed method that could be measured and gives different numbers for the same photo. It recognises dishes well; on portions it guesses.
Can I keep a food diary with ChatGPT?
Only as a makeshift in the chat history, with no totals, targets or Apple Health. With the Kairo connection, ChatGPT reads your real diary and can log meals on instruction. The diary stays in Kairo.
Does the connection work with Claude too?
Yes: Claude (claude.ai and Desktop), Claude Code, ChatGPT, Codex CLI and Gemini CLI, all through the same MCP endpoint and your Kairo login.
Does ChatGPT then see all my data?
Only what the ten tools return, and only when you ask a question. The connection uses your own login with the same access rules as the app; you can revoke it at any time.
