How can you track calories with ChatGPT or Claude?
Best with an app behind it. Kairo connects to ChatGPT, Claude, Claude Code, Codex and Gemini CLI through the MCP standard: sign in once with your Kairo account, and your assistant reads daily macros, meals, weight history and micronutrients from your real diary, and logs meals when you tell it to. Photographing, measuring and storing stay in Kairo.

In short
- Connect: add the Kairo endpoint in your assistant, sign in with Apple or Google in the browser, confirm, and you are done.
- Read (no confirmation needed): overview, daily macros, meals with search, meal details, weight history, micronutrients, food statistics, body-score history.
- Write (on instruction only): log a meal from text (Kairo analyses it like an in-app text scan) and log weight.
- Security: your own login token, the same per-user access rules as the app, no master key, revoke any time.
We build Kairo and the connection described here; everything technical on this page comes from our own implementation. We also say what the connection is not: not a replacement for the app, not a photo scan in the chat, and not a tool that writes without your instruction.
Why is ChatGPT alone a poor food diary?
Because a chat has no total. You can tell ChatGPT every day what you ate and it will answer kindly with estimates, but it measures no portion, checks nothing against a nutrition database, counts toward no target and forgets the history once the context fills up. Ask after three weeks "what was my average protein?" and you get a recollection of whatever is still in the chat, not an analysis.
Conversely, a tracking app is a poor conversation partner: it shows numbers but does not explain them, does not plan your evening and answers no question nobody built a button for. The combination fixes both, provided the assistant may read the real numbers.
How do you connect Kairo to ChatGPT, Claude or your CLI?
Kairo exposes an MCP endpoint; MCP is the open standard through which AI assistants attach tools. In Claude (claude.ai or Desktop) and ChatGPT you add Kairo as a connector with the endpoint address; for Claude Code, Codex CLI and Gemini CLI there is a one-line command each. On first access the browser opens: you sign in with the same Apple or Google account as in the app and confirm that this assistant may access your data.
If you have no Kairo account yet, the page points you to the App Store. The connection is for existing users, not a standalone service. Step-by-step instructions per assistant and copy-ready commands are at mcp.kairocalories.com.
What can your assistant then do with your Kairo data?
Ten things, eight of them read-only. Overview (profile, goals, streak, current status), daily macros for the last N days with averages, a meal list with name search, details of a single meal including micronutrients, weight history with target and change, micronutrients per day, food statistics (top foods, weekday versus weekend) and your weekly body score. Answers are compact and rounded so your assistant's context does not fill up with raw dumps.
Two tools write: log a meal from text (it goes through the same analysis in Kairo as an in-app text scan, including the reference cross-check) and log your current weight. Both are described so that the assistant uses them only on your explicit instruction. A duplicate guard stops an assistant that retries from creating the same meal twice.
Which questions are actually worth asking?
The ones no app has a button for. "Weekly review: what went well, where did I miss?" "Plan the rest of my day with what is in the fridge, 40 g of protein still open." "How does my weekend differ from my weekdays?" "Which five foods give me the most sugar?" Two of these (the weekly review and the rest-of-day plan) ship as ready-made prompts that appear in your assistant as entry points.
What is not worth it: sending photos to the assistant. The photo scan with portion estimation and label lookup lives in the app; the assistant gets the finished numbers. If you want to know how good those are, the benchmark is on the accuracy page.
How secure is the connection, and what does the assistant see?
The connection runs on your own login token, issued after the browser sign-in. Kairo's server uses no master key for it: every request hits the same per-user access rules as the app itself, so only your own data. Each tool call is logged (which tool, whether it succeeded, how long it took), never the contents of your request. A limit of 30 calls per minute keeps an assistant stuck in a loop from doing damage.
One honest limit: the token is a full user token. A compromised assistant could do with it whatever the app may: strictly confined to your account, but not read-only. So connect only assistants you trust, and revoke the connection under "Connections" when you no longer need it. How did we check this?
All statements about the connection come from Kairo's own implementation: MCP endpoint with OAuth login via the Kairo account, eight read tools and two write tools, access through the user token without a service key, logging without contents, 30 calls per minute. Setup is documented at mcp.kairocalories.com. Statements about ChatGPT and Claude on their own describe how chat assistants work in general.

Can ChatGPT count calories from a photo?
ChatGPT will estimate calories from a photo, but without portion measurement, without a nutrition reference and without a diary. How good that is, where it breaks, and how to connect ChatGPT or Claude to Kairo as a real tracker.

Is there a Cal AI alternative built in Europe with GDPR hosting?
Kairo: built by a German company, database and login in an EU region, photo analysis via a paid API that does not train on your images. What Cal AI (now MyFitnessPal-owned), MyFitnessPal and Yazio disclose, and the four questions to ask any app.
Read the answer - Accuracy
Which AI food scanner app is the most accurate?
Nobody can name one honestly: no app publishes a controlled head-to-head, and online "accuracy scores" rarely state a method. What you can check is who publishes their own numbers. Kairo does, including where it misses.

What people also ask
Can ChatGPT log meals in Kairo?
Yes, from text and only on your instruction. The meal is analysed in Kairo like a text scan and appears in your diary. The connection does not accept photos.
Do I need a Kairo subscription for the connection?
Yes. The connection is for existing Kairo accounts; logging from text uses the same analysis as the app and requires an active subscription.
Which assistants are supported?
Claude (claude.ai and Desktop), ChatGPT, Claude Code, Codex CLI and Gemini CLI, all through the same MCP endpoint.
How do I disconnect again?
Under "Connections" at mcp.kairocalories.com you see every connected assistant and can revoke individual grants immediately.

The app measures, the assistant thinks along. Connect Kairo to ChatGPT or Claude and ask about your week instead of guessing.
