Cal AI in Germany

Does Cal AI work in Germany?

Yes. Cal AI is on the German App Store, localised into 15 languages including German, and rated 4.71 there with over 10,000 ratings, the most-reviewed photo calorie app in the country. It remains a US product: US company, owned by MyFitnessPal since 2026, US-grown database. Kairo is the German-built alternative with native German, DGE cross-referencing and EU hosting.

In short

  • Cal AI: on the German App Store, German as one of 15 languages, iOS and Android, photo scan in the subscription only.
  • Company: Viral Development LLC (USA), part of MyFitnessPal since December 2025; database: MyFitnessPal, roughly 20 million foods.
  • Testers report gaps with European products (barcodes not found) and prices that only appear after the onboarding quiz.
  • Kairo: native German, DGE and USDA cross-reference, Centaurio UG in Hofheim, EU/GDPR hosting, purchases only through Apple's own sheet.

We build Kairo, so read this as the maker's answer rather than a neutral test. Everything about Cal AI here comes from its App Store listing, press reports (TechCrunch, MacRumors) and reviews, linked below. Where Cal AI is stronger (Android, database size, a free tier), it says so.

What do you get when you install Cal AI in Germany?

The regular app with a German interface. Cal AI (Viral Development LLC) runs on MyFitnessPal's database of roughly 20 million foods and ships on iPhone and Android. That is the most visible advantage over Kairo, which exists only on iOS. The photo scan, the core promise, sits behind the subscription; the free tier is a manual logger.

Two things changed for German users in 2026. Since a deal that closed in December 2025 and became public in March 2026 (per TechCrunch), Cal AI belongs to MyFitnessPal, a US company in San Francisco. And on 21 April 2026 Apple briefly pulled the app from the App Store (per MacRumors) because its billing flow breached Apple's rules; it was relisted after corrections. Neither changes how the app works, but both change the question of who you are handing your food data to.

How well does Cal AI handle German foods and dishes?

The interface is translated; the data foundation is not German. Testers report that in Europe roughly half of scanned barcodes were not found, and that the scanner in daily use read every white meat as grilled chicken. Those are user reports, not a measurement. We have not run Cal AI on a test set. But they match the logic: a database grown around the US market knows Rewe own-brands and bakery rolls less well than it knows Cheerios.

The reference values are American too. For a bare calorie figure that rarely matters; for recommendations (fibre, salt) the German DGE values and US guidelines differ noticeably. If you want to be measured against German reference values, ask what an app cross-references against.

What does Kairo do differently as the German alternative?

Kairo is built by Centaurio UG in Hofheim am Taunus, written natively in German (informal du-form, not a translation) and cross-references nutrition against the DGE reference values and USDA FoodData Central; for packaged goods, the barcode scanner pulls label values through Open Food Facts, and when data is missing the AI fills in the macros. Data lives in an EU region under GDPR, and purchases go exclusively through Apple's own payment sheet. The price is there before you commit, with no quiz first.

The second difference is disclosure: Kairo publishes a reproducible accuracy benchmark against USDA and Open Food Facts, including the cases where the estimate misses. Cal AI states no comparable test. We do not claim to be more accurate. We show how accurate we are. The full row-by-row comparison is at Kairo vs Cal AI.

When is Cal AI still the better choice?

If you need Android: Kairo is iPhone and Apple Watch only. If you depend on the huge MyFitnessPal database, say because you log many US products or restaurant chains. And if a free tier for manual logging matters to you: Cal AI has one, Kairo only the barcode scanner and three photo scans to try it. After that Kairo is a subscription app, weekly or yearly, with 3 days free on the yearly plan. That is the same model Cal AI uses for its photo scan, just without paid tiers underneath.

Yazio from Erfurt is the third option when German supermarket products, intermittent fasting and recipes matter more than the photo scan; Nutrola, if you want Germany's official food composition database (BLS) as the data source. Both are in the table above.

What does Cal AI cost in Germany?

That cannot be stated as a number here: according to one report, Cal AI shows its prices publicly only after the onboarding quiz and A/B-tests them per user. That is also the most common complaint in reviews. With Kairo you see the price in Apple's native purchase sheet before you agree, and cancel in iOS settings. Prices are on the App Store.

How did we check this?

Cal AI: App Store listing on the German storefront (iTunes Lookup, rating date in the table), TechCrunch on the acquisition, MacRumors on the brief removal in April 2026, App Store reviews on recognition, and a pricing report on quiz-gated prices, all linked. Kairo: our benchmark of 16 June 2026 and our privacy policy on EU hosting. We did not measure Cal AI on a test set ourselves.
