About Kairo

Who we are, how we source our data, and how we use AI.

What Kairo is

Kairo is an iOS app that tracks calories and macronutrients via AI photo recognition. It is built by Centaurio UG (haftungsbeschränkt) i.G. in Hofheim am Taunus, Germany — a small, independent team.

Who writes and reviews

Content is written by Valentin Weinert, founder and developer of Kairo. He is a software engineer and built Kairo’s AI-accuracy benchmark against USDA and Open Food Facts reference data. He is not a physician or dietitian — so every health-related statement is backed by a cited primary source, and health content is reviewed by a credentialed nutrition scientist (Ökotrophologe/RD) once that named reviewer is in place.

How we source our data

The per-100g nutrition values on our food pages are based on official food-composition databases — primarily USDA FoodData Central and the reference values of the German Nutrition Society (DGE). Calorie needs are computed with the scientifically recognized Mifflin-St Jeor equation. Health-related statements follow the EU Register of authorised health claims.

How we use AI

Kairo estimates calories and macros from a photo of your meal. AI estimates are not perfect — so we publish our reproducible accuracy measurement openly instead of asserting a marketing number. Some of our background articles are produced with AI assistance and are editorially reviewed and source-checked before publication.
